Roman Arkadyevich Abramovich was born in Saratov, the Soviet Union on October 24, 1966, into a Lithuanian Jewish family.

During the Soviet regime, his parents moved to Siberia. They both died when Abramovich was just four years old.

After then, he had to look for a way of survival, which made him sell consumer items like tires and rubber ducks. He made his fortune selling products on the street.

He started as a street trader before moving on to work as a mechanic at a local plant.

In 1999, Abramovich was elected governor of the Russian province of Chukotka. He ran for a second term as governor in 2005. 

Abramovich studied oil and gas at Moscow’s Gubkin Institute and subsequently worked as a commodity trader for the Swiss firm Runicom.

As perestroika opened up chances for privatization in the Soviet Union in 1988, Abramovich could re-establish his former firm.
