Career
In 1986 and at the age of 35, Manchin contested for a senatorial seat and won the election to become West Virginia Senator.
He served in this capacity until 1996. Before this, he was elected as a delegate in the West Virginia House of Delegates.
He contested for the governorship position in 1996 and lost the democratic primary election to Charlotte Pritt.
However, he got elected as the Secretary of State of West Virginia in 2000.
In 2004 Manchin contested and won the Democratic primary after the incumbent Democrtic governor threw in the towel because of a scandal.
He went on to win the general election by a wide margin. July 20, 2010, Manchin declared his interest to context for the special election to replace late Senator Roberts Byrd.
Before this, he had appointed his legal advisor to the position, to fill in for the dead senator.
In august of the same year, he detfated Democratic Congressman and former West Virginia Secretary of State Ken Hechler.
Joe Manchin went ahead to defeat John Raese in the general election to become the Senator.
He ran and won reelection for a full tenure in 2012 and 2018, and continues to serve as the senator of West Viginia.
