After being told he couldn’t play quarterback as a freshman, he was named the starter by his senior year. As a senior, he carried for 806 yards and eight touchdowns and passed for 2,148 yards and 24. As a 2-star prospect, he committed to play collegiate football at Utah State.

Career

In 2016, Love redshirted his first year at Utah State. He appeared in 12 games as a redshirt freshman in 2017, starting six.  Furthermore, he completed 129 of 235 passes for 1,631 yards, eight touchdowns, and six interceptions on the season. He was selected Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week after his debut vs. UNLV.

After passing for 359 yards and four touchdowns, he was voted MVP of the 2018 New Mexico Bowl. His squad went 11–2 and was ranked No. 22 in the AP poll at the end. After his second season, he was expected to be a future NFL first-round draft pick.

Love returned to Utah State in 2019 under a new head coach and offensive coordinator, and many of his colleagues from the previous season had graduated, including four offensive line starters.

However, he started all 13 games again, completing 293 of 473 passes for 3,402 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions, a career-high. With the changes to the roster and coaching staff, his team fell to a 7–6 record. Meanwhile, after the 2019 season, Love declared that he would forego his senior year and join the NFL Draft in 2020.

Love was selected 26th overall in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers, becoming the first player from a Group of Five conferences. He signed a four-year, fully guaranteed contract worth $12,383,470 with a signing bonus of $6,566,160 on July 1, 2020. The first time the rookie pay system was modified, a quarterback received a fully guaranteed deal.

The NFL canceled preseason activities for the 2020 season on July 28, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Love was officially placed as the third quarterback on the depth chart for the 2020 season on September 11, 2020, behind Rodgers and third-year quarterback Tim Boyle, purportedly so Love could focus on his development.

The Packers finished the 2020 season with a 13–3 record, receiving the NFC’s top seed, and losing in the NFC Championship Game to the eventual Super Bowl champions, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Additionally, to begin the 2021 season, the Packers named Love their backup quarterback to Aaron Rodgers. He appeared in preseason games against the Houston Texans and the Buffalo Bills. In relief of Rodgers, Love made his NFL regular-season debut in the fourth quarter of a 38–3 loss against the New Orleans Saints on September 12, 2021.
