10 Most Expensive Magic Card | All You Need to Know

Magic Cards are otherwise known as Magic: The Gathering or MTG. MTGs are tabletop and digital cards invented by Richard Garfield. Talking about the most expensive magic cards, there are lots of them you can buy, sell, and trade.

They all come at a price. Richard Garfield pioneered the first trading card game. It requires 2.8 players, a game with medium complexity and strategic depth. The wizard of the coast, a company dedicated to building role-playing, trading cards, and digital games, makes the cards.

Magic Cards can be of great value, but the only way to know if a card is expensive is to find it. Do you know the card to look for? Below is a list of the most expensive in 2023 that will have you ransacking your home.

#1. Black Outs

The Alpha Card costs a graded price of $60,000-$500,000. An Alpha Black Lotus is signed by designer and artist Christopher Rush, and it is the most valuable magic card ever. The Gathering card of all time, fetching over half a million dollars at auction.

The Black Lotus is rare and unique because of Christopher Rush’s autograph adorning its protective plastic case. Sources say that card grader PSA gave the autograph a perfect 10 Gem Mint rating. It is one power of nine- making it one of the most powerful cards in the game.

Not all Black Lotus is signed or as valuable as the signed version. The card makes the most expensive and valuable trading card ever sold at auction.

Black Lotus is banned from all formats except vintage.

#2. Ancestral Recall

Ancestral Recall is often considered the blues’ most powerful card. A part of the alpha series out of five boon cards, each a different color.

It is considered rare, while order boon cards are uncommon. This card like the Black Lotus is banned on all platforms except the Vintage, where it is restricted.

Time Twister is extremely powerful as it has the power to force all players to shuffle everything that is currently on the board back into their library.

You can get this at the rate of three mana, and it lets you place the Time Twister into the player’s new graveyard and then draw cards. It forces your partner to do the same. It’s an incredibly potent spell that allows you to draw a new hand and also reset the game without changing the actual board state.

The wrong use of the Chaos Orb by players has caused it to be banned. It is banned in all formats, including Vintage.

What is Power Nine?

In Magic: The Gathering, Power Nine is a set of 9 cards that were printed in the game’s early concepts, including the Black lotus, Ancestral Recall, Time Work, Mox Pearl, Mox Sapphire, Mox Jet, Mox Ruby, Mox emerald, and Time Twister.

They are the most powerful cards in the game that were printed in the Alpha, Beta, and unlimited sets in 1993 and early 1994. They are rare, with only 22,800 copies of each card printed, excluding promotional releases.

These cards are capable of acting as second land drops on early turns. They allow for strong third 1 and 2 and usually work as Lands in cubes they are available in.

What is MTG Format?

Eternal formats are constructed play formats that allow cards from all Magic: The Gathering Sets. They are Vintage, Legacy, Commander, and Pauper.

Vintage- Formerly known as Type 1 or Type I, is an eternal format that allows for the use of all printed cards such as Acorn Card, non-standard magic back, and certain banned cards.

Legacy- Formerly known as Type 1.5, is an internal format with a more limited card pool than vintage. Unlike vintage, the legacy has a high number of cards due to their power.

Commander is officially named by The Wizard of the Coast as the Elder Dragon Highlander. It is a casual multiplayer for Magic: The Gathering with specific rules centered around a legendary creature called the Commander.

Pauper is a constructed format of Magic: The Gathering in which only common cards are allowed.

What Magic Cards are Worth Money?

The most valuable in terms of price is the famous (and banned) Black Lotus, but in terms of deck construction, pick a strategy and find cards that build on it. Also note that some platforms (Untap, MTG online, etc.) can let you play without having to buy physical cards.

Where was Magic: The Gathering Created?

Creator Richard Garfield first began work on the game while exploring a doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania. A prime knowledge of mathematics helps when painstakingly crafting and balancing any card game.

How do you Play Magic: The Gathering?

For beginners, I’d recommend watching a tutorial or having an experienced player help you, but the game boils down to playing land cards to tap for mana and spending that mana to cast “spells” (cards).

The converted mana cost of a card can be found by adding together the symbols in its upper-right corner.

There are a ton of magic cards, but some are worth a lot more than the others. To invest in this, you need to know about the MTG because some of these cards are restricted and banned.
