Democratic politician William Allen Egan was born on October 8, 1914, and passed away on May 6, 1984. He presided as Alaska’s first governor from January 3, 1959, to 1966, and again from 1970 to 1974.

Egan, along with Bill Walker, is the only two Alaskan governors in the state’s history to have been born in Valdez. He ran as the Democratic candidate for governor in five different states (1958, 1962, 1966, 1970, and 1974).

5. Archie Van Winkle

American Marine Colonel Archie Van Winkle received the Medal of Honor for his leadership as a staff sergeant during the Korean War’s assault to the Chosin Reservoir (March 17, 1925 – May 22, 1986).

He served in the Marine Corps Reserve as an active duty member after the start of hostilities in Korea and was placed on inactive status on July 16, 1951. He was a combat veteran of World War II.
