Pharrell Lanscilo Williams (born April 5, 1973) is a record producer, rapper, singer, and songwriter from the United States. With close colleague Chad Hugo, he formed the hip-hop and R&B production duo, The Neptunes in the early 1990s and produced songs for various recording artists.

Early life 

Pharrell Lanscilo Williams was born on April 5, 1973 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, the United States. He is the eldest of three sons of Carolyn Williams, his mother who is an homemaker by profession and Pharaoh Williams, his father who is a Teacher .

His ancestry spanned generations in Virginia and North Carolina. One of his ancestors came to West Africa in 1831, causing other relatives to immigrate from the United States to Liberia in 1832.

Williams met Chad Hugo at seventh grade summer camp, where Williams played the drums and Hugo played the saxophone. They attended Princess Anne High School, where they were members of the school’s orchestra. Williams graduated from high school in 1991 and attended Northwestern University for two years before dropping out.

Career

In the early 1990s, Williams formed a hip hop group called ‘Surrounded by Idiots’ with Chad Hugo, Magoo and his cousin Timbaland; they dissolved before making a record.

He then formed a “R&B type” four-member team, the Neptunes, with Hugo and his friends Shay Haley and Mike Etheridge. They entered a talent show in high school, where they were discovered by producer Teddy Riley, who had a studio next to the school. After graduation, the band signed with Riley.

Williams collaborated with Madonna on their 11th studio album Hard Candy (2008). In June 2008, an NME article revealed that Williams was interested in working on the next album of American rock band, his band, The Strokes. In 2008 he released his third studio album Seeing Sounds.

Williams collaborated with Shakira on “Did It Again”, “Why Wait”, “Good Stuff” and “Long Time” on her sixth studio album She Wolf (2009). The following month, Williams made a guest appearance on French singer Uffie’s debut her album, released in early 2010. The Neptunes produced numerous songs on Clipse’s third album Till the Casket Drops (2009).

Together with Japanese music producer Nigo Williams, he launched the Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream clothing lines. Williams is also active in hospitality with Swan, an indoor/outdoor restaurant in Miami, and the Goodtime Hotel in Miami Beach.

Williams has also been active in television and film. In addition to his work in the Despicable Me films, he also co-wrote the soundtrack for the 2014 film ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’. He co-produced the film ‘Hidden Figures’, which earned him an Oscar nomination in 2017. Williams was the narrator in the 2018 animated film ‘The Grinch’ and appeared in the 2015 films ‘Entourage’ and ‘Pitch Perfect 2’.

In 2013, Williams collaborated with French electronic music duo Daft Punk on the songs “Get Lucky” and “Lose Yourself to Dance”, both from Daft Punk’s fourth studio album Random Access Memories. “Get Lucky” reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and number two on the US Billboard 200.
