Is Fiji Water Worth It_ Why Is It So Expensive

Given this level of popularity, it may surprise you to hear that Fiji Water is one of the most expensive bottled waters on the mainstream market. But is Fiji Water worth it?

A 24-pack of identically sized bottles of Aquafina water from PepsiCo costs about $15 less than Fiji Water, on average.

Bottled water is one of the highest-selling beverages around the globe. In the United States, Fiji went for 18.5 billion dollars in sales in 2017. Fiji Water is the number one imported bottled water brand in the U.S.

This post will explore how a bottle of Fiji Water is made. Then, we will review the reasons for the price differences between the imported water known as “Earth’s Finest Water” and the rest of the bottled water crowd.

Since its inception in 1996, Fiji Water has been doing business responsibly and seeking opportunities to make a difference.

That means investing in sustainability, the environment, and local communities while focusing on significant issues with like-minded partners to enable positive change.

In this article, we’ll talk about Fiji Waters, its components, and its cost implications. Stay with me!

What is Fiji Water?

Fiji is a brand of bottled water shipped from Fiji. According to marketing materials, the water comes from an artesian aquifer in Viti Levi.

One hundred percent of FIJI Water is from a single source in the pristine, tropical Fiji Islands, an archipelago of over 300 islands nestled in the South Pacific, more than 1600 miles from the nearest industrialized country. It is bottled at the source in the remote Yaqara Valley on the island of Viti Levu.

Fiji water is headquartered in Los Angeles, California.

Is Fiji Water Good for You?

Fiji water provides decent amounts of minerals that keep you hydrated. Additionally, it has lower contaminants than other tap water.

According to a June 2015 report released by Fiji Water, its levels of arsenic, barium, fluoride, and nitrates are below the FDA’s limits. Furthermore, it contains no cyanide, aluminum, benzo(a)pyrene, nitrites, and other potentially harmful compounds.

Considering its mineral content, it’s fair to say that Fiji Water benefits your health. It doesn’t just quench your thirst; it also contributes to your daily nutrient intake.

But is this drink really that safe? After all, it comes in plastic bottles. Manufacturers claim that their bottles are made from plastic PET (polyethylene terephthalate) and contain no BPA or Bisphenol-A.

This chemical can leach into water and may contribute to metabolic disorders, hormonal imbalances, and cancer in the long run.

Since Fiji Water is free of BPA, it can be considered safe. Additionally, bottled water is regulated by the FDA and must comply with strict safety standards.

How Much Is Fiji Water?

The cost of Fiji bottled water differs according to size. The 500ml coaster costs $11.50, 500ml silver costs $20.00, the Fiji water 700ml sports cap costs $30.00, and Fiji water 1l is $37.00.

Why is Fiji Water Expensive?

Unlike other bottled water, Fiji water goes through a series of processes before it gets to the final bottling. One of these processes is the natural purification method.

Here are the top reasons why Fiji water is expensive.

#1 Its unique life cycle

Fiji Water has a unique life cycle. A bottle of Fiji Water must travel significant distances after being bottled at Yaqara Valley on the island of Viti Levu.

It is said to be over 1,600 miles from the nearest industrialized country.

The distance a bottle of Fiji Water travels drives the price point up. It must be placed on ships and, in the case of the United States, travels over 5,500 miles to be put on trucks for further distribution.

Shipping may not sound like an expensive proposition, but it is. For every liter of Fiji Water placed on the ship, .02 gallons of diesel fuel is required. While that seems like a small number, once multiplied by the hundreds of millions of FIJI Water being shipped each year, it grows to millions of gallons of fuel.

Due to the logistical aspects of getting the water from Fiji to the United States, half of the wholesale cost of Fiji Water is to cover the cost of transporting it.

#2 The Bottle

One of Fiji’s selling points is its uniquely shaped bottle.  The bottles are constructed from a plastic resin called Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET). This is excellent news as PET plastics are durable and can be recycled almost everywhere.

The bottle blanks are produced in the United States and sent on a boat to Fiji.

FIJI Water labels are almost as iconic as the bottle shape itself. The labels are printed in New Zealand and shipped off to meet the bottles and caps in Fiji. Now that all the components have finally arrived, FIJI Water can be bottled.

The uniqueness of the bottle adds to the overall cost of Fiji Water.

#3 Modernized Bottling Process

Fiji Water prides itself on its natural method of bottling. This unique process is both complex and capital-intensive.

The system comprises specialized pumping equipment known as a “closed system.” Thus, consumers get the first above-ground whiff of FIJI Water when they open the bottle.

#4 Marketing Strategies

Fiji Water as a brand adopts notorious marketing strategies upon which it thrives. They invest heavily in marketing which in turn leads to increased brand loyalty.

The high-end perception FIJI has created for itself leads to an ability to charge higher prices. Consumers are willing to pay for the association with luxury.

#5 Distribution control

Along with the presence of FIJI Water in high-end places, its absence in other spots may be just as impactful. Again, as bottled water is a difficult market to corner from a profit perspective, its controlled distribution strategy may seem counterintuitive.

FIJI Water has used both popularity and exclusivity to drive a perception of quality, which leads customers to be willing to pay for the commodity.

Summarily, at the core of Fiji’s business proposition is a product earmarked for excellence.

Is Fiji Water Worth it?

Fiji is admirable for its natural alkalinity, taste, and natural volcanic filtration process, similar to Waiakea.

Fiji water is marketed as a brand of artisan water that comes from tropical islands with the same name. It’s derived and shipped from Fiji and boasts a unique mineral profile, as the manufacturers point out.

According to Fiji Water, this beverage is rich in electrolytes and has a pH of 7.7, which is significantly higher than pure water.

In addition to being the number one imported bottled water in the United States, Fiji is available in 60 different countries across the globe, making it a significant source of global recognition and legitimacy in the market.

Final Thoughts

Fiji Water is a product of high class and high quality; while the cost might seem expensive compared to other brands, its packaging and content are worth every bit of the price.
