Career

Kalitta Air isn’t the first business of Conrad Connie Kalitta, he was first a racer before ever venturing into the airline business.

According to Celebrity.com, Kalitta raced successfully through the mid-1990s. Between 1967 and 1994, he won ten National Hot Rod Association events and became the first racer to reach 200 mph during a Hot Rod Race.

He later teamed up with Shirley Muldowney as the Bounty Hunter and Bounty Huntress, in a pair of Ford Mustangs, hers a Buttera chassis, his a Logghe.

Kalitta finished second in Top Gas at the 1963 Winternationals and third in Top Fuel at the 1965 Springnationals.

In a 427ci “cammer”–powered by a Top Fuel dragster, he won the 1967 American Hot Rod Association (AHRA) Winternationals in Scottsdale, Arizona.


Kalitta won ten NHRA national races in all, including the 1994 Gatornationals and U.S. Nationals, which was his final title.

In 1992, Kalitta was inducted into the American Motorsports Hall of Fame. Kalitta was named #21 on the 50th Anniversary list of the National Hot Rod Association’s Top 50 Drivers, 1951-2000.

In the Muldowney biopic film Heart Like a Wheel, Beau Bridges played Kalitta in the major role (1983).

He is the father of drag racer Scott Kalitta, who was killed in an accident in Old Bridge Township, New Jersey, in 2008. Doug Kalitta, a racer, is his uncle.

On November 14, 2016, Kalitta received the NHRA’s first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award at the season-ending Mello Yello Awards Ceremony.

Kalitta Air is currently single. However, he was previously married to Mariana Mcgee, until 1975.

The union produced a child Scott Kalitta, who is unfortunately late. Scott followed in the footsteps of his father but was not very lucky as he died in a car crash.

The crash happened at the Old Bridge Township Raceway Park during a race on 21st June 2008.

Connie is also the uncle of famous car racer Doug Kalitta.
