In 1984, Sean McDonough graduated from the S I New house school of public communications at Syracuse University with a degree in Broadcast Journalism. He was known to have worked for Syracuse football coach dick MacPherson during his college days.

Career
In 1981, Sean McDonough began his Intern at Enterprise Radio Network. In 1982, he started his broadcasting career At Syracuse university as a play-by-play announcer for the Syracuse Chiefs of the International League. From 1984 to 1985, he worked for PBS as an Ivy league football announcer. From 1986 to 1987 he was a sideline reporter and also a play-by-play announcer.
In 1990, he began a career In CBS sports where he took part In the broadcast of college basketball, college football, The college world series, The NFL US open tennis, Three Olympics, and Golf( Four masters and PGA championship). He had a major setback during this period when the then CBS sports director, Sean McManus informed him that his contract would not be renewed.
At age 30 in 1992, he became the youngest man to announce the National broadcast of the world series.
He began broadcasting Boston Red Sox games on WSBK-TV ( channel 38) after he had successful graduation from Syracuse. Moving on, Sean worked with Bob Montgomery and Jerry Remy. He announced the Red Sox games through the 2004 season before moving to other local stations like WFXT( channel 25), WABU (channel 68). He was replaced by NESN announcer, Don Orsilo in 2005.
In 2005, He turned down an offer to become the New York Mets play by play man on television. In 2019, He returned to Red Sox broadcasts as a part-time radio by-play announcer. During this period he became a permanent part-time announcer alongside Joe Castiglione, Lou Merloni, and will Flemming In 2020.
ESPN formally announced and confirmed on June 29, 2021, that he would be their lead play-by-play voice for the forthcoming NHL coverage starting In the 2021-2022 season. Later on, when the league returned to ESPN and ABC after 16 years at NBC he was reported to have an interest In an NHL role ever since then.
